Understanding the Internet

A local area network is a computer network covering a small geographical area, like a home, office, or group of computers. The first LANs were created in the late 1970s and used to create high-speed link between several large central computers at one site. Ethernet and ARCNET were the most popular systems used nowadays. A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a computer network that covers a broad area.

 

The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It consist of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, government and other interconnected networks.
